What is Chatter
Last updated: 2026-10-02
**Chatter is an app for reading together.** You add the book you're reading, mark which chapter you're on, and from there you discuss it chapter by chapter with a group and talk to the book's characters in the first person. Nothing in the app goes past the chapter you're on.
It works in Spanish and English, in the browser (chatter.es) and as a mobile app. You sign in with a Google account.
How it works
You bring the book. Upload the EPUB or PDF of a book you own, or add it from the catalog. Chatter reads its structure —which chapters it has and in what order— and everything is organised by chapter from then on.
The group. A group of readers with their own personalities reads the book with you and talks about it: they argue with each other, ask what you thought and nudge you to keep going. Their replies are generated by a language model.
The characters. You can talk to the book's characters, who answer in their own voice from the exact point in the story you've reached. The cast is revealed chapter by chapter: nobody shows up before you've met them.
Clubs. You can start a book club with other people, invite them by code or from your friends list, set a target chapter with a deadline and discuss it in a thread that only shows what was written up to the chapter you've confirmed.
How it avoids spoilers
Chatter limits everything to the chapter you've marked. When the group replies, the server only gives it the chapter you're on and the next one, so it can be at most one chapter ahead: what happens later isn't in the conversation.
The same goes for the characters, the cast list and club comments. It's not a rule anyone has to remember; it's how the app is built.
What it does with your books
Chatter is not a library or a bookshop. It doesn't distribute, sell or reproduce the text of any work.
The file you upload is your private copy: nobody else sees it and its text isn't stored in any database, only its structure (chapter titles, order and length). It isn't used to train any model. The details are in the privacy policy.
How it differs from Goodreads
Goodreads is a catalog for logging what you read and reading reviews before or after a book. Chatter is used while you read: it knows which chapter you're on and keeps you company at that point.
For keeping a huge reading log, Goodreads is better. Chatter can import your Goodreads library from its export file.
What it costs
The free plan includes the whole app —books, clubs, calendar and characters— with a cap of 15 chat turns a day.
The paid plan raises that cap to 100 turns a day. The price is shown before you pay, billed through Stripe and cancellable from Settings, with no lock-in.
What it doesn't do
There are no streaks, points or leaderboards of who reads most. Chatter doesn't turn reading into a challenge.
Replies from the group and the characters are generated by a language model and can be wrong.
Who makes it
Chatter is designed, built and maintained by one person: Roberto Otero Galán, who also writes the blog. It isn't a company with an office.
Work on it started in August 2026, from a concrete problem: books get abandoned when you read them alone, and talking about them with someone on a different page means risking spoilers.
